Asian American Native Hawaiian Pacific Islander Women’s Equal Pay Day is the day that Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander women in the U.S. must work until before they earn the equivalent of what men were paid the previous year.

Because women earn less, on average, than men, they must work longer for the same amount of pay. The wage gap is even greater for most women of color. Starting in 2022, data now includes part-time, seasonal, and gig workers, many of whom are essential workers piecing together multiple part-time jobs to get by.

According to the Department of Justice, American Indian and Alaska Native women are missing and murdered at a rate of more than 10 times the national average. Missing and Murdered Indigenous Persons Awareness Day is an annual national effort to bring attention to the horrible acts of violence committed against Indigenous people, particularly women and children. Help spread information about the problem.

The League of Women Voters of Colorado works with the League of Women Voters of Wyoming to raise awareness about the problem.

Join the League of Women Voters as we celebrate the 31st anniversary of the National Voter Registration Act (NVRA) - also known as the Motor Voter Act - enacted on May 20, 1993.

The law resulted in voter registration being offered to any eligible person who applies for or renews a driver‘s license or applies for public assistance. It also requires the United States Postal Service to mail election materials of a state as if the state is a nonprofit.

The League of Women Voters was instrumental in getting the NVRA passed. Read more about League‘s role:
https://www.lwv.org/newsroom/press-releases/league-women-voters-marks-30th-anniversary-nvra

This landmark legislation has allowed millions of people to register to vote — and the League of Women Voters is a major part of that. In the 1980s and 90s, LWV led the campaign for the NVRA‘s passage. When it was finally signed into law, President Bill Clinton gave the League of Women Voters the pen he used to sign it into law, calling the League "fighters for freedom."

We believe registering and voting is the best way for each of us to decide what happens in our country. The League of Women Voters also registers voters at many events during each year.

Join the League and help us with our mission to register and inform voters.

To read more about the NVRA, see the Wikipedia article:

The League of Women Voters honors the memory of Ida B. Wells-Barnett, American investigative journalist, suffragist, educator, and an early leader in the civil rights movement on her birthday Saturday, July 16.

Born in 1862, she wrote, spoke, and organized for civil rights and the women‘s suffrage movement. She was one of the founders of the NAACP. She worked to combat prejudice and violence. The 2004 film "Iron Jawed Angels" dramatizes the moment during the Woman Suffrage Parade of 1913 when Wells ignored instructions to march with the segregated parade units and crossed the lines to march with the other members of her Illinois chapter.

Latina Women’s Equal Pay Day is the day that Latina women in the u.S. must work until before they earn the equivalent of what men were paid the previous year.

Red Shawl Day is an annual national effort to bring attention to the horrible acts of violence committed against Indigenous people, particularly women and children. Throughout the week surrounding November 19, people are encouraged to wear red as a symbol of the loss of sacred lifeblood through violence.

The National Park Service is part of an all-of-government effort to bring attention and action to missing and murdered Indigenous people. America‘s national parks are part of and surrounded by many Indigenous communities. As part of this observance, you may see National Park Service staff wearing red shawls.

The United Nations‘ 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence is an annual campaign that begins on November 25, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, and runs through International Human Rights Day on 10 December, International Human Rights Day.

Last year the UN marked the 16 Days under the theme “UNiTE! Activism to end violence against women and girls”, noting these statistics:
1 in 3: More than 1 in 3 women experience gender-based violence during their lifetime.
1 in 5: In 2021, nearly 1 in 5 women aged 20-24 were married before turning 18.
40%: Less than 40 per cent of women who experience violence seek help of any sort.

Violence against women and girls remains the most pervasive human rights violation around the world. A backlash against women’s rights is underway around the world. Anti-feminist movements are on the rise, attacks against women human rights defenders and activists are up, and the legal status of women’s rights is increasingly imperiled in many countries. Regressive new laws are exacerbating impunity for perpetrators of domestic violence, governments are using force against femicide and gender-based violence protestors, and women’s rights organizations are being increasingly marginalized.

Violence against women and girls is preventable. Evidence shows that the single most important driver of policy change is a strong and autonomous women’s movement—making feminist mobilization in the face of anti-rights backlash a literal matter of life and death.

This 16 Days, we’re encouraging everyone to get involved: from amplifying the voices of survivors and activists to supporting women’s organizations and strengthening feminist movements, we can all act to empower survivors, reduce and prevent violence against women and girls, and protect women’s rights.

United Nations International Human Rights Day is the anniversary of one of the world‘s most groundbreaking global pledges: the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). This landmark document enshrines the inalienable rights that everyone is entitled to as a human being - regardless of race, colour, religion, sex, language, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth or other status.

The Declaration was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in Paris on 10 December 1948 and sets out, for the first time, fundamental human rights to be universally protected.

Today is Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) Awareness Day.

Organizations around the country come together to raise awareness and uplift the importance of the long-established EITC.

This year, in honor of the largest EITC in our Colordo‘s history, Governor Polis issued a proclamation in honor of the day.

The EITC is a powerful, targeted tool to give a boost to working people.

The EITC is a refundable, cash-back tax credit for families who earn low incomes. This means families could get money back even if they owe $0 in taxes in a given tax year.

Originally enacted at the federal level in the 1970s, the policy has a history of bipartisan support, and its efficacy is backed by decades of research.

Children in families who claim the EITC have better outcomes at birth, improved education outcomes, and increased lifetime earnings. Colorado should do all we can to ensure families are able to find and claim this and other refundable credits (i.e. the Child Tax Credit) they qualify for.

As a refundable tax credit, expanding and preserving our EITC is frequently among the Colorado Fiscal Institute‘s top priorities.

Womens Equal Pay Day is the date that symbolizes how far into the year women in the U.S. must work to earn what men earned in the previous year.

Because women earn less, on average, than men, they must work longer for the same amount of pay. The wage gap is even greater for most women of color. Starting in 2022, data now includes part-time, seasonal, and gig workers, many of whom are essential workers piecing together multiple part-time jobs to get by.

The League of Women Voters honors Harriet Tubman on her birthday, March 10.

Quote from a proclamation:

Whereas Harriet Ross Tubman was born into slavery in Bucktown, Maryland, in or around the year 1820;
Whereas she escaped slavery in 1849 and became a “conductor” on the Underground Railroad;

Whereas she undertook a reported nineteen trips as a conductor, endeavoring despite great hardship and great danger to lead hundreds of slaves to freedom;

Whereas Harriet Tubman became an eloquent and effective speaker on behalf of the movement to abolish slavery;

Whereas she served in the Civil War as a soldier, spy, nurse, scout, and cook, and as a leader in working with newly freed slaves;

Whereas after the War, she continued to fight for human dignity, human rights, opportunity, and justice"

The fight continues for human dignity, human rights, opportunity, and justice and we must continue to answer the call.
